sugimoto

The film follows the artistic life of Hiroshi Sugimoto from 2008 to 2013. While an established photographer, the artist also produces sculpture, performance and has his own art collection. Given his tendency to perfectionism, how he is able to manage his time among his various projects is a mystery. Sugimoto enjoys the process in which his ideas realize concrete form and has produced many brilliant works. All his work seems to share the question, where do we come from and go from here, in common, raising issues about the fate of mankind in the process.

In the film, Sugimoto himself talks about his journey since his debut in the US and his career up to today, and his fascination with 8x10 photos. The film also comprehensively captures the artist’s production process for the first time, including a diorama photo shoot, one of his most well-known works, at the American Museum of Natural History, as well as developing and printing at his studio. Going backstage at his exhibition at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, The National Museum of Art, Osaka, Izu Photo Museum, Hara Museum and of his Bunraku performance, the film reveals Sugimoto’s playful, yet rigorous, enjoyment of life.
