What is the 20th century
Known for his appropriation art series, such as the actress series and historical art series, Yasumasa Morimura (born in 1951) has been working on a new project since 2007. “Requiem for the 20th Century” borrows images from the 20th century’s landmark documentary photos in order to explore its central ideas and events.
In addition to the new self-portrait photo works, he also incorporates the video work of Yukio Mishima, Chaplin, Lenin, Dali, Andy Warhol and Iwo Jima, with its US flag, all hallmarks of the century.
This documentary examines Morimura’s artistic approach as well as its purpose, by documenting the process of making the work and in interviews with the artist.
