"Fish, big ones, really big ones, were picking at dead human bodies in the river. As I looked I was very sorry for them and I thought it was so awful... I watched them for a while and prayed for them. I whispered how sorry, how very sorry I was. Then I went to Yokogawa and Kabe along with the civil defense unit. At Kabe I got medical treatment. There was very little medication though. My husband took care of my injury two hours a day, everyday. But he couldn't help my hands which continued to simply hang limply. We didn't have any medical doctors there. We didn't even have medication. No medication at all, not even Mercurochrome. My injured hands were infested with maggots The women who were organized to help the military came in helped to pull each maggot out of my hands with chopsticks. I clearly wasn't able to move my hands at all. The burned skin on my hands was infested with maggots. Those women came to pick maggots out of my hands everyday. It was truly miserable and tragic..."
I said to him: ''Leave me alone and go ! I am gonna die soon anyway and I look horrible. I don't want to be seen.'' Then my husband said to me: ''What are you saying, you can recover. As long as you are alive, everything will be all right. Let's leave this place." |
